While Rumiko Takahashi was already considered one of manga's greatest creators thanks to her earlier hits such as Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha eclipsed the success of all of her previous works. She is joined in her quest by a powerful swordsman and Kikyo's former lover, the half-man, half-demon Inuyasha. Upon arriving in this new era, Kagome is mistaken for the warrior princess Kikyo, and is tasked with recovering all of the shards of the shattered Shikon Jewel, a powerful magical artifact. Inuyasha tells the story of Kagome Higurashi, a high school student from modern-day Tokyo who suddenly gets teleported through time to a feudal Japan that is being terrorized by demons.
